Upcoming MBA Related Events - March 2009
Two more weeks until Spring Break! Woohoo! I am definitely ready for a break after this crazy 3rd term. Juggling 5 classes, leading a Net Impact Service Corps project, working on a Pier to Pier 5K Charity Run/Walk project, and competing in the 2009 Education Leadership Case Competition was no small feat. Every time one of my MBA colleagues discovers my blog, the first thing they ask is "how do you have time to even blog?!"
Anyway, there are a couple of great upcoming events this month @USC you should definitely check out.
Kiva alleviates poverty by facilitating 'micro loans' from individual lenders to entrepreneurs in the developing world. By matching nominal capital needs with a desire to give and connect with others, Kiva has become one of the most successful and visible social benefit websites in history--facilitating nearly a million dollars in loans per week with repayment rates in excess of 98%.
Please join us for Jessica's powerful story and see how one person's vision can impact the world.
USC and the prestigious TED conference have partnered to deliver this independently organized TED event right here at USC.

New Product Failure - the Segway?
I am working on a product failure assignment for MKT 530 - Product Development and Marketing Strategies class and I initially chose the Segway since it never lived up to its hype and expectations. Yes, so maybe the Segway will never be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy, but was it really a product failure? From a business and commercial viewpoint, definitely. From a social and world-changing perspective though, I'm not so sure. Watching Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, talk about the Segway and his vision for the product is making me rethink my originally definition of product failure. Maybe he was just way ahead of his time...

Go Green Expo Date: Jan 23-25 2009 Location: The Los Angeles Convention Center
Go Green Expo, the brainchild of Bradford Rand and his team at Expo International, was conceived after a viewing of the film "An Inconvenient Truth." It prompted the question, "How can we make a difference?" This question resonated with Rand and his team and Go Green Expo was born.
A truly unique event from the ground up, Go Green Expo will not only change your perception of environmentalism but also how events like this are produced and managed. Companies will showcase what they are doing to reduce their respective carbon footprint and you will learn about "eco-friendly" alternatives to current everyday products and services.

BIL 2009 Date: Feb 7-8 2009 / 9 am - 5 pm Location: CSULB in Long Beach, CA
Everyone knows TED - Ideas worth spreading. TED is a great place to sit and listen to interesting ideas. Many of these ideas make it online, and millions get to experience them.
The catch for many of us is that TED is $6,000, which is too expensive for most people, including a great number with good ideas worth spreading. BIL has been created as a free space for people with ideas to come together and share them.
BIL is an ad-hoc conference for people changing the world in big ways. It's a place for passionate people to come together to energize, brainstorm, and take action. BIL is free. Go to BIL, not TED.
Register. Sign up. Get out there. Go now! And let me know if you do go. Leave a comment.
Jeff Skoll - The Social Rainmaker
I have read a lot about Jeff Skoll and the Skoll Foundation, but have never actually seen him or heard him speak. Just some context, Jeff Skoll graduated from Stanford Business School in 1995 and met eBay's founder Pierre Omidyar who hired him as the company's first president. He remained President until the arrival of Meg Whitman in January 1998. After that he started the Skoll Foundation which now ranks as the largest foundation for social entrepreneurship in the world. In 2003, he created Participant Productions, a Los Angeles based media company, which fund feature films and documentaries that promote social values. Some of these films include Charlie Wilson's War, The Kite Runner, and An Inconvenient Truth.
This TEDtalk was really inspirational and his enthusiasm and passion really shone throughout his short speech. Check it out:
